The River Nile, so unique in so many ways — world’s longest river; one of the few norhward flowing major rivers on the planet; last remaining vestige of the great Gondwanaland rivers. A place where freshwater fish evolved as the Tethys Ocean drained away leaving the drifting Saharan sands. This river was always part of a bigger picture, and has taken centre stage in religions and civilizations, our evolution — our very survival!
And it is this river which we come to appreciate on our “Roots of the Nile” Angling Adventure. A journey from the source of this mighty river to its angriest and most elemental heart — Murchison Falls — a place of water so violent that nothing man made has ever survived this raging gorge. And it is here that we will teach you to fish!
For it is in these churning and highly oxygenated waters that monsters live. Nile Perch, Bagrid catfish and Vundu all grow to colossal sizes where baitfish trapped by the enormous waters are preyed upon in a year round feeding frenzy.
Like many awe inspiring places one has to appreciate the context of such a unique environment to fully absorb what you have in front of you, so we start this trip on Lake Victoria. Instead of making you sit in a taxi through hours of Kampala’s chaotic traffic, you are whisked away to some rarely visited islands of Lake Victoria’s shores for a taste of the adventure to come. Your first rest and recovery day is spent fishing from and around an island offshore before following the lake to its only outlet — the Source of the Nile to indulge in a bit of angling in the rapids there.
The adventure then takes us north to the wilderness of the wildlife filled Murchison Falls National Park. Against a background of Africa’s great wildlife, we indulge in four days of intense fishing our way through the unbelieveably diverse range of habitats that such a big tropical river provides. From each fishing spot a different species can be targeted through different techniques — some bizarre, some amazing, and some monsters.
Ultimately we will be after a huge Nile Perch caught from the very river it evolved in and was named after. These behemoths reach sizes of over 100kg and are extremely fit and strong from their daily hunting in this fast flowing water. Come join us on the angling adventure of a lifetime to chase the monsters of your dreams.
All our sport fishing is done on a catch and release basis, and only a few fish are targeted for the evening’s dinner table. The dragons and monsters of past times were hunted to extinction. We like to think of our monsters growing older, wiser and bigger to be enjoyed by future anglers who come visit these wind beaten and hostile shores.
