I just wanted to write you a quick email to say thank you so much for taking me to Lake Turkana with you last week.
It was the most amazing, unique trip that I have ever been on and I loved every moment of it from start to finish. The car journey in itself was a hell of an experience, being able to view so much of the ‘un-touristy’ parts of Kenya was very special – never mind managing to find ourselves up close and personal with two leopards and some charging zebras!
At the start of the trip I truly had no idea what to expect at all. Stories of huge waves and high winds leaving people stranded on islands didn’t exactly coincide with my traditional (English!) view of a lake! Nothing could have prepared me for the awesome barrenness of the land around Turkana and the extreme environment – the coupling of severe heat with relentless winds and hypothermia!
This atmosphere was one that I personally loved. The feeling of us all being out there, cut off and vulnerable to our surroundings was fantastic. When you add in the constant excitement of fishing, it made for a truly memorable experience.
It was great to get to know the team and I am unable to thank each of you enough for all your help, support, guidance and encouragement throughout the trip weather it was to do with the fishing or putting up with me asking what on earth people were saying in Swahili for the umpteenth time!
The fishing, whether going out on the boats or from shore, was incredible. I have never really fished in such an extreme way, and enjoyed desperately trying to sight fish from shore was such fun and a good challenge!
I am aware how incredibly lucky I was to latch onto that Nile Perch and am so grateful for all your instruction whilst I played it. Without your words of wisdom I am sure that the fish would have never reached the surface! I had never seen a fish the size of that before in person and it really did take me aback! It is a moment in my life that I am certain will never be far from my mind and the picture I am sure will find a suitable place on my desk!
I feel so incredibly lucky to have joined you on your trip and can’t thank you enough for such a memorable experience.
I will be back out again. Thank you ~ Will Southall
